I Fell Hard for These 10 Luxury Bali Hotels — An Aesthete’s Confessions

I Fell Hard for These 10 Luxury Bali Hotels — An Aesthete’s Confessions

The plane hasn’t even begun its descent, and my heart is already racing up and down the aisle.

I lost count of the tickets years ago, somewhere after my very first visit.

One summer I lost myself in Ubud’s rice paddies; another season, on the cliffs of Uluwatu with incense hanging in the air, I counted the sun as it dropped into the sea.

I’ll say it without a moment’s hesitation: this island is a table set for discerning palates and travelers hopelessly in love with beauty.

Because here, luxury isn’t measured by thread count.

Luxury breathes in the morning incense, hides in the flower offering laid on a banana leaf, and gives itself away in the distant shimmer of a gamelan and the smell of fish that left the nets only hours ago.

So here are the 10 breathtaking hotels that held my heart hostage — the ones that made me struggle to close my suitcase every single time I left.

1.Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan — Ubud (Sayan Valley)

The moment I stepped onto that narrow entrance bridge, my feet simply left the ground.

Because below me lay the valley, above me the sky, and right in the middle floated a vast lotus pond, shimmering like quicksilver above the clouds. It was, quite literally, postcard-perfect!

Below, the Ayung River whispered softly, and as the morning mist settled into the valley, a thousand shades of emerald wrapped around me.

My coffee went cold in my hand; I just looked, and looked, and looked.

From DPS Airport it was about a 1-hour-15-minute drive to Sayan, past rice fields and carved stone temple gates; then three full, glorious nights.

In the mornings I walked along the river. At the Sokasi cooking academy I pounded the traditional base genep spice paste in a mortar until my fingers smelled of turmeric for days!

I gave one afternoon to Ubud Palace and the Sacred Monkey Forest — where one cheeky monkey, betting on my distraction, snatched my sunglasses and bolted!

Location: Ubud, Sayan (Gianyar Regency), Bali  |  Size: ~60 suites and villas  |  Vibe: Spiritual, jungle-clad, cinematic

My personal highlights…

“The bebek betutu that arrived at my table at Ayung Terrace still visits my dreams. A whole duck rubbed with dozens of spices, wrapped in banana leaf and slow-cooked for hours; at the first touch of the fork it fell apart into strands. As the valley sank into darkness, that candlelit meal was the quiet summit of my whole trip”

2.Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve — Ubud (Kedewatan)

Some hotels aren’t an address; they’re a feeling.

The Sanskrit meaning of its name — ‘temple’ — made itself felt before I even reached the front desk.

Perched on a bend of the Ayung River and tucked into the arms of the jungle, it’s a retreat where golden light filters down through the leaves.

Bamboo cocoons suspended over the river, the rush of water, a chorus of crickets… all of it read like pages from a fairytale I’d known since childhood.

I drove about 1.5 hours from DPS to Kedewatan; the noise of the city faded a little with every kilometre, and for two nights I became part of this forest.

On the Ayung I threw myself into the rapids; with every stroke of the paddle, my laughter bounced off the valley and came right back to me!

One morning a cycling tour carried me between villages, family temples and rice terraces. I saw the evening out on the rooftop at Ambar, to a jazz set laced with the distant hum of a gamelan.

Location: Ubud, Kedewatan (Gianyar Regency), Bali  |  Size: ~60 suites and villas  |  Vibe: Sacred, romantic, at one with nature

My personal highlights…

“My most treasured moment was dinner at Sawah Terrace, overlooking the paddies, accompanied by a traditional Balinese dance. Lawar tossed with freshly grated coconut and spices, crisp babi guling; as the dancers’ footfalls quickened with the gamelan’s rhythm, their golden ornaments trembled in the candlelight. Every bite whispered the island’s soul to me.”

3.Capella Ubud — Keliki (near Tegallalang)

I fell in love at first sight — shamelessly, at that.

This place rewrites the word ‘camp’: a jungle fairytale signed by the legendary Bill Bensley — but with no trace of cold showers or drab khaki.

Forget faded safari tones; here there are deep, rich colours, leather trunks, the spirit of 19th-century explorers. When I ran my hand over the cool brass latch of a trunk, it felt like touching another century.

Each tent has its own pool out front and the forest itself framed in its window.

About 1.5 hours from DPS to the village of Keliki; in this hidden sanctuary of just 23 tents, two nights, two separate dreams.

At the Auriga spa, inspired by the lunar cycle, a Balinese ritual renewed me.

At night, beside the campfire, sparks crackling under the stars, I listened to a local storyteller.

Location: near Ubud, Keliki (Tegallalang, Gianyar Regency), Bali  |  Size: 23 tented villas  |  Vibe: Adventurous, theatrical, romantic

My personal highlights…

“At the 16-seat Api Jiwa — a restaurant whose name means ‘fire to the soul’ — the chef’s dance around the coals was a ceremony in itself. There was no menu; the freshest reef fish of the evening arrived at my plate, wrapped in smoke and spice. In that seat facing the fire, every dish was a fresh surprise.”

4.COMO Shambhala Estate — Payangan (near Ubud)

Some places don’t host you; they heal you.

Set on a tropical slope above the Ayung River, this retreat is a breath of fresh air hidden deep in the jungle. The humidity clung to my skin the moment I stepped through the door.

A thousand shades of green, healing springs, a sacred fountain, and forest that fills your lungs with every breath.

About 1 hour 20 minutes from DPS to Payangan; for three nights I surrendered to this green embrace.

Morning jungle walks, muscles unknotting in hydrotherapy pools, a yoga session to open the day.

Every activity gently peeled the screen-glow and the notification pings off of me.

Location: Payangan (near Ubud, Gianyar Regency), Bali  |  Size: ~30 rooms and suites  |  Vibe: Healing, tranquil, restorative

My personal highlights…

“The COMO Shambhala Cuisine served at glow demolished my prejudice that ‘healthy food is bland.’ On the jungle-facing terrace, a vivid plate of the island’s colourful vegetables and fresh seafood; beside it, a golden-orange jamu steeped with turmeric, tamarind and ginger. In the first sip, the whole island seemed to fit into a single glass: earth, sun and spice.”

5.Bvlgari Resort Bali — Uluwatu (Pecatu)

This time I held my breath without meaning to.

Perched atop a cliff 150 metres above the Indian Ocean, this is where Italian elegance embraces the Balinese soul. Looking down, my stomach dropped with a pleasant vertigo.

Hand-hewn volcanic stone, dark Javanese teak, carved antiques; and at the cliff’s edge, that endless blue as far as the eye can see.

I couldn’t put my camera down for a second — every frame was more than Insta-worthy!

About 45 minutes from DPS to Pecatu; in this cliff-carved elegance, two nights among 59 villas.

A blessing ceremony at the working temple on the highest point, a cool swim in the infinity pool, sunshine on the private beach reached by funicular.

Location: Uluwatu, Pecatu (Badung Regency), Bali  |  Size: ~59 villas  |  Vibe: Majestic, architectural, opulent

My personal highlights…

“The sate lilit I had at Sangkar turned into a small celebration on the cliff’s edge. Minced fresh reef fish, grated coconut, kaffir lime and spices, pressed onto lemongrass sticks and crackling over the coals; beside it, char-grilled pink snapper and fresh sambal dabu-dabu. With the sound of the waves, every bite was its own gift.”

6.Alila Villas Uluwatu — Uluwatu

Turns out luxury and respect for nature can live flawlessly in the same sentence — and Alila proves it with every award.

Clean lines of sun-bleached timber rising from the cliffs of the Bukit Peninsula.

Local stone, natural wood; a 50-metre infinity pool and that famous cabana suspended over the void.

About 45 minutes from DPS to Uluwatu; two calm, phone-free nights in my private-pool villa.

I watched the ocean for hours from the cabana; one morning I eased into yoga.

In the evening, at Uluwatu Temple, I watched the Kecak dance rise with that ‘chak-chak’ chorus in the firelight; on the way back, I cooled off at Padang Padang.

Location: Uluwatu (Badung Regency), Bali  |  Size: ~65 villas  |  Vibe: Understated, eco-conscious, airy

My personal highlights…

“The authentic nasi campur I had at The Warung — clinging to the cliff, terrace facing the ocean — looked simple but unfolded layer upon layer. Small portions of sate lilit, grilled fish, coconut-laced urab salad, and that fiery sambal matah — raw shallot, lemongrass, chilli; its sharp freshness lit up my nose! The plate I’d taken for plain placed the island’s heart in my palm once more.”

7.AYANA Resort Bali — Jimbaran

But the thing I truly fell for was that sunset burning red.

At this vast clifftop resort stretched along Jimbaran’s ‘golden mile,’ descending to Rock Bar — built right above the crashing waves — was a ceremony in itself.

Set into the foot of the cliff, this bar offers one of the island’s sunset scenes that leave you speechless. Quite literally Insta-worthy!

Even the funicular ride down, with the cliff view streaming past the glass, was an experience on its own.

Just 20 minutes from DPS to Jimbaran; two nights.

A sunset cocktail at Rock Bar, a cool swim in the ocean pool, a traditional Balinese massage at the spa, and a long beach walk in the evening watching the fishing boats come home.

Location: Jimbaran (Badung Regency), Bali  |  Size: Large integrated resort (~290 rooms and villas)  |  Vibe: Iconic, lively, view-drenched

My personal highlights…

“At Kisik, set right on the sand beside Rock Bar, the grilled seafood I ate as the sun went down turned into a feast. Prawns and fish I chose from the ice-topped counter were char-grilled Jimbaran-style, finished with fresh sambal matah. Feet in the sand, a cool glass in hand, the sky painting itself orange — this is exactly why I take to the road.”

8.Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay — Jimbaran

Some hotels aren’t a single building; they’re a little village.

Into the distant sound of the waves drifted a faint strain of gamelan.

Overlooking Jimbaran Bay, this resort — with its thatched-roof villas and stone pathways — is a true Balinese village; a flower offering on every threshold, temple stillness in every corner.

Across this view of white sand and ocean, the sun melted gently into the bay each evening.

20–25 minutes from DPS to Jimbaran; three lazy, sun-scented nights in my private-pool villa.

I lounged by the pool at the Sundara beach club. At a Balinese cooking class I learned to wrap sate lilit around a lemongrass stalk — my clumsy first attempt made the chef laugh!

I was pampered at the spa; in the evenings I walked to the seafood shacks along the sand.

Location: Jimbaran (Badung Regency), Bali  |  Size: ~147 villas  |  Vibe: Elegant, intimate, village-textured

My personal highlights…

“My most special moment was that ‘floating breakfast’ drifting in my villa’s pool. As the tray glided across the water’s mirror, there were fresh tropical fruits, a char-kissed nasi goreng — crowned with a flawless fried egg — and homemade jams. The morning sun warmed my shoulders, reflections trembling on the water, and I couldn’t help photographing it before the first bite!”

9.The St. Regis Bali Resort — Nusa Dua

Some luxury doesn’t shout; it whispers.

St. Regis whispered with a timeless elegance.

On the white-sand beach of Nusa Dua, a turquoise lagoon pool stretching as far as the eye can see.

A private butler for every villa, daily flower offerings, and a fresh frangipani waiting for me on my pillow each evening.

About 30 minutes from DPS to Nusa Dua; for two nights I was received into this classic elegance.

I swam in the lagoon — I could step straight from my villa into the water. I walked the beach at length.

In the evening I watched the St. Regis Bar’s sabre-champagne (sabrage) ritual, with the flash of the steel and that sharp ‘crack.’

Location: Nusa Dua (Badung Regency), Bali  |  Size: ~120 rooms and villas  |  Vibe: Classic, grand, elegant

My personal highlights…

“The legendary Sunday Champagne brunch at beachfront Kayuputi carried me to another world: oysters glistening on ice, a spoon of caviar, refined Asian-inspired plates and flowing champagne. But what stayed with me was the megibung I experienced at Dulang, tucked into a hidden corner — sharing dozens of local dishes by hand off a banana leaf was hospitality in its purest form.”

10.The Legian Seminyak — Seminyak

And finally, the beachfront elegance I fell for unconditionally as the time to leave drew near.

In the lively heart of Seminyak, a sanctuary opening straight onto the sand; just outside, the bustle of the town, and inside, the calm of that famous three-tier infinity pool.

Modern, sophisticated yet warm; it faces one of the beaches where the island’s sunset turns violet.

When the light turned gold — falling first on my face, then on the sea — every corner became a postcard.

About 30–40 minutes from DPS to Seminyak; two sunset-filled nights in an ocean-facing suite.

I sunbathed on the top tier of the pool and browsed Seminyak’s chic boutiques — I bought a hand-woven ikat cloth as a keepsake.

I took a long walk at Petitenget, and in the evening saw the sunset off from a lounger with a cocktail.

Location: Seminyak (Badung Regency), Bali  |  Size: ~67 suites and villas  |  Vibe: Chic, beachy, sophisticated

My personal highlights…

“On the ocean-facing terrace of The Restaurant, the smell of smoke mingling with the crackle of coals and the salt air whetted my appetite before the plate even arrived. Ikan bakar: a whole freshly caught fish rubbed with lemongrass and spices and grilled; beside it, crisp tempeh and a sharp sambal terasi. As the sky turned pink and Seminyak’s golden sand lay beneath my feet — this is why I repack my suitcase every single time.”
