10 Achingly Beautiful Restaurants in Canggu, Bali I Never Stopped Thinking About!

Six years ago, when I first landed in Canggu, I’d only planned to stay a week — my bag held a beach, a few cold beers, and a handful of empty days, nothing more. Today I’m counting my eighth visit, and every single time I find a fresh reason to come back. This island has become something close to a second home; so much so that half my suitcase is now reserved for the running list of restaurants I’ve scribbled down under “next time, for sure”!

What makes Canggu so special is the effortless way surf culture folds into boutique luxury, and rice paddies blur into handmade ceramics. I’m not the kind of traveller who sees everywhere and truly falls for nowhere. I return to a place again and again until I’ve absorbed its light, the smallest detail on the plate, that feeling that stirs in me the moment I step through the door. If you’re the sort who knows the instant you walk in whether you belong somewhere, this list is for you.

Here are the ten real places that stole my heart — each one visited many times, some of them lingered in for hours on end.

Luma

The moment I walked through Luma’s door, my steps slowed on their own. Once a private villa, this place now breathes through the scent of woodsmoke — who knows what these walls witnessed before.

Born from the friendship between chefs Cam Emirali and Kieran Morland, it stages every table like a scene of its own. The light falls in a honeyed tone, like the last glimmer of sunset, so soft that you’ll want to simply watch before lifting your fork.

This time I came to Batu Bolong for three days and surrendered myself to The Slow — that iconic boutique hotel of just 12 suites, its walls dressed in contemporary art. The scent of fresh flowers and wood that greeted me at the door lifted the day’s weariness clean off my shoulders.

I sat on the hotel’s rooftop with a chilled rosé as the sun went down; in that moment I felt I belonged both nowhere and everywhere at once. The next morning I sipped my coffee at Deus Ex Machina right next door, then strolled down to Luma for a short walk.

Location: Batu Bolong, Canggu  |  Size: Around 60 seats, two-story villa concept  |  Vibe: Smoky, intimate, sophisticated

My personal highlights:

  • Batik Lobster Risotto meeting chili butter — the undisputed winner of the night
  • Seaweed-wrapped prawns with romesco sauce and kenari nuts
  • Squid-ink aioli drifting over the octopus — a genuine painting on the plate

Sazón

The instant I crossed Sazón’s threshold, I felt myself dropped onto another continent; one of Spain’s most elegant streets, right there, in the middle of Bali. An amber light spilled over the plates, and the tiny gel droplets on them glinted like wet little jewels.

Back to Batu Bolong, back to The Slow — my love for this neighbourhood seems to begin anew with every visit. I spent my days at Old Man’s beach, caught in the rhythm of the waves; in the evenings, I walked to Sazón.

In between, I lost myself in La Laguna’s little boutiques and the hotel’s Room 13 Gallery — a hand-painted ceramic in one corner cost me half an hour of my time.

Location: Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong, Canggu  |  Size: Small and intimate, around 40 seats  |  Vibe: Elegant, creative, romantic

My personal highlights:

  • The chef’s seafood paella, made specially that evening
  • The signature dessert, plated like a small work of art
  • The Spanish-Balinese blend felt in every dish that reached the table

Numero Quattro Echo Beach

At Numero Quattro, when the salty sea air mingled with the steam of pasta rising from the open kitchen, I set down my spoon and simply watched. The sea breeze hit the tables along with the evening sun, and handmade pasta took shape before my eyes, within a few short minutes.

I made a three-night escape to Echo Beach, this time staying at the legendary Hotel Tugu Bali. I slept beside a century-old antique — this museum-hotel, where an antique-collecting family keeps one of Indonesia’s richest art archives, is a reason to travel all on its own.

By day I wandered among lotus ponds. At sunset I went to Tanah Lot; as the temple on the rocks turned to orange, the murmur of the crowd fell away all at once. In the evenings, I walked over to the restaurant just a few steps from the hotel.

Location: Jl. Pantai Batu Mejan No.4, Echo Beach, Canggu  |  Size: Mid-sized beachfront hall with an open kitchen  |  Vibe: Lively, sophisticated, nostalgic

My personal highlights:

  • Oxtail Lasagna — melt-in-the-mouth filling of oxtail braised for hours
  • Smoke-scented grilled pork chop, alongside gin-based cocktails
  • The giant tiramisu split in two and shared — the sweetest finale on the table

Skool Kitchen

The chef’s dance with fire — that was the single image left in my mind the first time I saw Skool Kitchen. I fell for its philosophy instantly: every plate is brought to life by the touch of an open flame.

I chose to sit at the counter, because that’s where this place’s heart beats. With the Australian traveller beside me, we first watched the flames in silence, then found ourselves in the middle of a conversation that stretched on for hours — there’s nothing better for those travelling solo.

I was at Hotel Tugu Bali again; this place feels like a second home by now. I opened the morning with yoga in the garden, where nothing could be heard but the sea and birdsong. In the afternoon I took a long walk along Echo Beach. And in the evening, I claimed my spot at the counter.

Location: Batu Mejan / Echo Beach area, Canggu  |  Size: Mid-sized, open-flame counter concept  |  Vibe: Energetic, intimate, smoky

My personal highlights:

  • The flame-cooked fish I ate at the counter, chatting with the chef
  • Copper pots glinting in the shadow of the flames — a feast for the eyes
  • The still-steaming dessert that arrived at the end of the night

Santanera

When the taxi stopped, I first thought I’d come to the wrong place. Santanera rose like a three-story palace amid rice paddies and trendy boutiques. Inside, everything felt like a theatre set; but what I truly couldn’t take my eyes off was the spiral staircase climbing to that ivy-draped rooftop bar.

This time I stayed at COMO Uma Canggu — zero distance from Echo Beach, that stylish surf hotel where the ocean stretches to the horizon from the rooftop pool. Watching the sunset from within the water nailed my first evening exactly where it stood.

I went to Santanera by car. On the way back I walked along the hotel’s private beach; alone on the sand in the moonlight, with only the sound of the waves. The next day, a massage at the wellness centre, followed by wood-fired seafood — a flawless day.

Location: Jl. Tanah Barak No.55-57, Canggu  |  Size: Three stories, spacious 160-seat venue  |  Vibe: Grand, warm, cosmopolitan

My personal highlights:

  • Ceviche mixto in leche de tigre — the lively, refreshing harmony of octopus and prawn
  • Slices of duck jamón hidden between a crisp tapioca cracker, filled with tamarillo jam and blue cheese
  • The sunset I watched from the Terraza rooftop bar, a Latin American cocktail in hand

The Avocado Factory

I caught the airiness of The Avocado Factory before I’d even stepped inside, in that fresh green scent of mint. Bali’s first avocado bar, at its new address in Batu Mejan, offered up a breakfast scene brimming with greenery and daylight. The early morning light all but danced across the wooden tables.

It was the last morning of my stay at COMO Uma Canggu; I wanted my final breakfast to be here. I took a surf lesson at the break right in front of the hotel — I fell twice, stayed up on the third, and that small victory set the tone for my whole day.

Then I walked over here. In the afternoon I lounged at the beach club, and toward evening I joined the hotel’s sustainable kitchen workshop.

Location: Jl. Bumbak No.88, Kerobokan Canggu (Batu Mejan)  |  Size: Spacious café-restaurant with both indoor and outdoor seating  |  Vibe: Airy, healthy, sun-drenched

My personal highlights:

  • Truffle Benedict — the scent of truffle transforming my whole morning at breakfast
  • Honey-glazed roasted chicken, the most unforgettable dish on the dinner menu
  • The Hamachi Crudo, arranged on the plate like a flower

Shelter

The moment I stepped into Shelter, time seemed to stop. Natural stone, reclaimed timber, greenery spilling from every corner — and when the candles were lit in the evening, with the warm scent of melting wax and flickering light, the place turned into a film set.

This time I came to Pererenan by staying at Noema Resort — right on the beach, new and refined; by now, this is my Pererenan base. In the evenings I walked to Shelter.

By day I cycled through the rice paddies; the wind bent the green stalks in waves, and all I could hear was the sound of my tires on the dirt road. In between, I drifted through the small design boutiques nearby, and never once minded losing track of time.

Location: Jl. Pantai Pererenan No.133, Pererenan  |  Size: Mid-sized, open architecture built from natural materials  |  Vibe: Boho, warm, intimate

My personal highlights:

  • Za’atar flatbread, so herby and good I could hardly bear to share it
  • Wood-fired lamb kofta, with a perfect balance of spice
  • Roasted eggplant with labneh and pomegranate molasses — a flavour explosion, sweet and creamy at once

Red Gunpowder

At Red Gunpowder, my eyes adjusted first to the light, then to that seductive scent of spice. A red, dim glow fell over the plates, the wood, the faces; the place recalled the most mysterious scene of an old noir film.

I stayed at Noema Resort again. That day I first took a short ride toward Tanah Lot, then rested by the poolside in the afternoon.

Before dinner I browsed Pererenan’s little spice shops; cinnamon, cardamom and incense mingled together, and a different colour glowed on every shelf.

Location: Pererenan, Canggu  |  Size: Small, intimate, dimly lit dining room  |  Vibe: Romantic, spiced, mysterious

My personal highlights:

  • The smoke-scented tandoori chicken served beneath the red lights
  • The naan and chutney platter we shared at the rustic wooden tables
  • That mysterious, cinematic atmosphere felt in the dim corners of the place

Bokashi

When I learned that Bokashi’s name means “fermented organic matter” in Japanese, I smiled in surprise — that simplicity really had seeped into every corner. A single dry branch adorning an otherwise bare wall told me more than a whole array of decoration ever could.

The organic grocery on the ground floor, meeting the charcoal scent of the robatayaki grill upstairs, gives rise to a quiet, peaceful space.

This time I stayed at The Bohemian Bali — being adults-only, it offered me a rare kind of quiet in Canggu. Before dinner, I browsed the grocery.

But the moment I couldn’t forget was upstairs: watching the chef at the robatayaki grill, slowly turning each morsel over the embers, was almost meditative. On my return I closed out the day with a book by the poolside; the sound of the water and the cool evening filled me with calm.

Location: Pererenan, Canggu  |  Size: Two stories, grocery + restaurant concept, intimate scale  |  Vibe: Calm, minimalist, serene

My personal highlights:

  • The Balinese heritage pork noodle bowl served with enoki mushrooms, bok choy and nori
  • Wagyu Tataki served with onsen egg — the texture was exactly right
  • The handmade island sea salt I discovered in the ground-floor grocery — the most special keepsake I carried home

Uma Garden

I approached Uma Garden with skepticism at first; tucked down a side street, all but unmarked, it looked like an everyday garden. But after the first bite, that doubt gave way to admiration — the kitchen of this simple, greenery-wrapped place was far more serious than it appeared.

This time I came to Umalas by staying at Katamama — an award-winning boutique hotel on the edge of Seminyak, built from 1.5 million hand-pressed terracotta bricks, with warm, earthy tones throughout.

By day I cycled through Umalas’s rice paddies and browsed the area’s small design studios. But I saved the loveliest moment for last: at the final stop of this list, I sat at Petitenget beach as the sun went down. As the sky turned pink, I felt all eight of my visits, all those tables, all those faces, distil into a single feeling — gratitude.

Location: Jl. Umalas 1 No.8, Kerobokan Kelod, Umalas  |  Size: Intimate, garden-concept open-air restaurant  |  Vibe: Calm, surprisingly serious, intimate

My personal highlights:

  • Wagyu sirloin — one of the finest cuts of beef I’ve had in years, and I’m not exaggerating
  • That quiet dinner beneath the light-strung trees in the middle of the garden
  • The particular silence that lets you feel Umalas’s local, far-from-the-noise texture

I came to this island for a week, and I’ve returned eight times — and each time, my list has grown a little longer. But these ten places will always hold a place of their own in my heart. If you’re a traveller who cares about aesthetic detail and the story behind the flavour, tuck this list into your suitcase — I promise, a piece of your heart will stay here too. Maybe, on my ninth visit, I’ll spot you in one of those gardens!
